Elijah's Religion

Old Religion

Elijah had religion on which Ahab did frown, Elijah had a religion on which Ahab did frown.
He called on it when needed to bring the fire down. He called to it when needed to bring the fire down.
Elijah, he grew lonely and, thought that he would fail. Elijah grew so lonely he thought that he would fail.
God showed him seven thousand that had not bowed to Baal.

It showed him seven thousand that had not bowed to Baal.

Now Moses had religion, the kind of which we've read.
It's what kept Israel moving with Moses at their head, It's what kept Israel moving with Moses at their head.
They left the land of Egypt; Pharaoh's army on their track, They left the land of Egypt; Pharaoh's army on their track.
They had just what was needed to roll the waters back.

They had just what they needed to roll the waters back.

Now grandpa got religion, like Elijah I don't know. Now grandpa got religion--like Elijah's I don't know.
We know that he had plenty; made him get up and go. It seems that he had plenty; made him get up and go.
He lived life as he saw it; got blessings from the Lord He lived his life as he saw it; got him blessings from the Lord.
For what he had he lived it, according to God's word.

He had enough and lived it according to God's word.

Now grandma got religion, the same as grandpa had. Now grandma had religion, the same as grandpa had.
She loved her life she lived it; did nothing that was bad. She loved her life and lived, doing nothing that was bad
Now grandpa would start talking; he had a lot to say. And grandpa would start talking; he had a lot to say.
Grandma would speak right up, "Now, Pa, don't you go on that way."

Grandma would speak right up "Now, Pa, don't go on that way."

The old folks had religion. They had their trials, too
They trusted their religion; it always took them through.
When either got in trouble, as some folks always do. When either got in trouble as some folks always do,
The one would pitch right in and help to pull the other through. The one pitched in and helped to pull the other through.

You can talk about the old folks and call them what you please.
Their troubles never got them down. They passed them by with ease.
There was no give or take with them--No compromise at all. There was no give or take with them, no compromise at all.
They stood on their religion and tried to live it all.

They stood on their religion and tried to live it all.

Take heed of what you do or say. The time is near at hand. Take heed of what you say or do; the time is near at hand.
Grandpa and Grandma are not here. So, who will take their stand? Grandpa and Grandma are not here. So, who will take their stand?
We need religion like they had, the kind that's strong and true. We need religion like they had, the kind that is true blue,
The kind that God has sent for us, the kind to take you through.

The kind our God sent here, the kind for me and you.
